Popularity Made Me Do It: Facebook, Narcissism and Jail Time

i love meI think the old adage about how the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime needs to be replaced with a new saying…something along the lines of the criminal always brags on Facebook.  How many times have we now seen people getting in trouble because they bragged about doing something stupid or illegal on Facebook.  From the guy who posted a picture of himself syphoning gas out of a police car to the guy who bragged about drinking and driving, people seem to leave their brains in the off position the second they log in to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn or any other social network.  Call it narcissism or just plain stupidity, but for some reason people feel a need to tell the world about every little thing they do, no matter how insignificant, stupid or even illegal.

The most recent example of what we are calling the “Look at Me Syndrome” landed a Corpus Christi, Texas teenager in the Juvenile Justice Center last night.  Apparently she bragged on Facebook about driving a stolen minivan (as if anyone really cares…other than the owner and the police of course).  The police jumped on the lead and found the van and arrested the girl.  She is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle which is punishable by up to 2 years in jail.
